Women's Soccer's Dawn Johnson named USCAA DII Student Athlete of the Year

University of Maine at Machias student, Dawn Johnson, named USCAA Women's Soccer Division 2 Student Athlete of the Year.

At the fall championship tournament banquet, on November 8, 2018, Dawn Johnson was recognized as the USCAA Women's Soccer Division 2 Student Athlete of the Year.  This award focuses on the student athletes' performance in the classroom and their community involvement.  It is one of three individual awards presented annually by USCAA.

Dawn hails from South Orleans Massachusetts and is a junior in the UMM psychology program.  She was one of the top offensive players on the team this season, but her stellar performance in the classroom, and service to her community is what stood out to the selection committee.  Dawn is an active member of the UMM Student Senate, is a board member and coach for the Downeast Youth Soccer Association, and during school breaks she works with adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder and other like disorders.

Humbled by this award, Dawn said, "I really work hard and do my best with everything -- on and off the soccer field.  I love sharing the joy of the game with others, especially youth.  I'm also fortunate to work with individuals on the Autism Spectrum not only because its great experience for my future career, but because it motivates me to always bring my A-game.  I'm humbled by this acknowledgement.  I'm not sure it's completely sunk in just yet."

Her parents, Derrick and Sheila Johnson gushed, "The proudest day of our lives was the day Dawn was born.  And every day since then, she has turned out better than we have dreamed."

Dr Lori Schnieders, Assistant Professor of Counseling Psychology, stated "I have enjoyed having Dawn in class, she is a focused excellent student and athlete both in the classroom and on the field. When I was faced with finding a new teaching assistant for the fall semester I knew right away Dawn was my choice. She is organized, compassionate when tutoring her peers and always ready to help."

The athletic department is very proud of Dawn and her accomplishments on and off the field. Her coach, BJ Marshall, stated that Dawn is very deserving of this recognition, it is an honor for her and the university!  Having players recognized on the national level like this showcases what our school community is all about -- it is an honor for her and the university.
